How PRP can help regrow your hair

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss is a treatment that uses the patient's own blood to stimulate hair growth. Here's how it works:

  1. Blood Draw and Preparation: A small amount of the patient's blood is drawn, usually from the arm. This blood is then placed in a centrifuge, which spins it rapidly to separate the different components: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. The result is a concentrated solution of platelets in plasma, known as PRP.
  2. Activation of Growth Factors: Platelets contain growth factors that are essential for healing and tissue regeneration. When PRP is prepared, these growth factors become concentrated, which is beneficial for stimulating hair follicles.
  3. Injection into the Scalp: The PRP is injected into the areas of the scalp where hair thinning or loss is occurring. This process typically involves a series of injections across the scalp. The growth factors in PRP are believed to help stimulate the activity of the hair follicles, encouraging new hair growth and strengthening existing hairs.
  4. Stimulation of Hair Follicles: The growth factors in PRP help increase blood flow to hair follicles, extend the growth phase (anagen phase) of the hair cycle, and potentially reverse miniaturization of hair follicles, which is a common cause of hair thinning in conditions like androgenic alopecia (pattern baldness).
  5. Results: PRP therapy is usually done in a series of treatments, often spaced about a month apart for the first few sessions. Over time, patients may notice thicker, healthier hair. However, results can vary, and multiple sessions may be needed for optimal results. Maintenance treatments every 4-6 months are sometimes recommended to sustain hair growth.

It's considered a minimally invasive and natural treatment since it uses the patient's own blood. PRP for hair loss is often combined with other treatments at Better Me Med Spa & Wellness Center like microneedling, laser therapy, or medications like minoxidil or finasteride for enhanced results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@bettermemedspa.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Most patients begin to see noticeable improvement after the second or third session, typically around 3 to 6 months into treatment. Hair grows in cycles, so it takes time for new growth to appear. However, results vary, and for some people, full results may take up to a year. Maintenance treatments are usually recommended every 4-6 months to sustain hair growth.

PRP therapy involves multiple small injections into the scalp, which may cause mild discomfort. A topical numbing cream or local anesthesia can be used to minimize any pain. Most people experience little to no downtime, with some minor swelling, redness, or tenderness in the treated areas for a day or two. Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately.

PRP is most effective for people in the early stages of hair thinning or those experiencing mild to moderate hair loss, such as individuals with androgenic alopecia (pattern baldness). It works best when there are still active hair follicles. Those with severe hair loss or completely bald areas may not be ideal candidates. It's also not recommended for individuals with certain medical conditions like blood disorders or those on blood thinners.
